What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enlarge the breasts and give them a different shape. It is popular because it has an effect on the look of the whole body and not just the chest. A lot of women might decide to undergo the treatment either for cosmetic/aesthetic reasons, or perhaps medical/reconstructive reasons. Whatever the reason, the methods for augmenting the breasts are similar.
The overall method of augmenting the breast will depend on factors such as preferences made by you and your surgeon or your anatomy. The usual way to do it involves first making an incision along the natural crease of the breast (which will help make visible scarring minimal). Other places to make the incision include in the armpit and around the edge of the areola. After this the surgeon will make a pocket where the implant itself can be placed, usually underneath the muscle of the breast tissue with the positioning itself depending on the size and shape of the breast already. When the surgeon is finished he will stitch up the incision with sutures that are often dissolvable and fine. The surgeon may also wish to tape up the sutures to provide greater support. You and your surgeon will discuss all of the varying options in this area.
The procedure in general will require you to stay in hospital overnight but there are also cases where you can be in and out in the same day. The operation itself will be carried out using a general anaesthetic with a time period of around one to one and a half hours.
Patient satisfaction with the procedure is high, with most women feeling that the surgery helped them regain confidence and femininity. As a result the procedure’s popularity has been increasing in the UK to such an extent that the average bra size has increased, forcing shops to stock larger bras.
